Where to Stay
- Use Bike Hotels in the area where you picked the stages or the events to ride and watch. They have “bike packages” with all the services specific for cyclists at reasonable price. In this way I can enjoy some convenience and still have my freedom to choose the stages, routes, and the best spot where to watch the pros.
- Choose an accommodation that has room for the bikes or that would allow to bring the bikes into your room, and that is no more that 20-30 km from the place where you decided to watch the race, unless you drive closer to where you plan to start the ride. In this case, look for small villages where to leave your car safely.
- If you are following more than one stage in the same area, choose an accommodation that is close or in the middle of both locations where you will watch the race.

How to train
Read Base rules on how to train for a specific route length and a climb.
What to Bring with you for the Ride
The beauty of cycling in Italy is that there is a small village or town every few km with their small café’ where you can get a “cappuccino”, a pastry and refill your water bottle. Also, on top of the mountains, there are always refuges and café to warm-up, get food and drinks.
However, during the events, especially the ones on the hilltop finish, it can get crowded, therefore, I suggest to always bring some power bars and bananas with you and always 2 bottles of water.
For the Mountain stages, you will be warm climbing, but when you stop and wait one or more hours for the pros to come by, it will get chilly. Therefore, always bring a small backpack, with some additional warm clothes: a hat, long fingers gloves, a pair of light pool slippers to walk without ruining your cleats, a packable, windproof and water repellent vest.
Nutrition for the ride
In the morning, have a very nice breakfast that includes carbs and some proteins (yogurt, eggs, etc..). During the ride, try to eat a small bite, 1/3 of a power bar or ½ banana every 40 minutes. In this way, your glycogen level won’t go too low, and it won’t take so long to go back up, which will happen if you only eat after 2-3 hours of riding.
